國聯外卡最後一張季後賽門票，直到例行賽最後一天才分出勝負；巨人隊全場狂敲16安，7比1橫掃道奇晉級季後賽，紅雀只能飲恨。3日紅襪與藍鳥一役，「老爹」歐提茲生涯最終例行賽，賽前紅襪主場特別舉辦歡送儀式，前隊友席林、佩卓馬丁尼茲，多明尼加總統都到場致意。
2014年世界大賽冠軍巨人隊晉級關鍵戰，面對道奇日籍投手前田健太，前2局就打下5分奠定勝基，保住外卡席次，「憤怒鳥」只能明年重新來過。
5戰3勝的國聯分區賽將迎戰大都會隊，首戰台灣時間10月6日登場，雙方皆派王牌先發應戰，由「雷神」辛德加對壘巨人王牌左投龐加納。季後賽門票得來不易，巨人教頭波奇說，「今年和兩年前的確有很大的不同，熬過下半季一路拚戰，取得晉級感覺特別不同。」
老早就取得季後賽門票的紅襪隊，3日迎來「老爹」歐提茲生涯例行賽最終戰，紅襪賽前的歡送儀式中除了傳奇球星，還不乏重量級政治人物，包括多明尼加總統、麻州州長、波士頓市長、等人都到場致意，見證紅襪一代精神領袖謝幕。
40歲歐提茲生涯540轟高居史上第17，為紅襪隊3度捧起世界大賽冠軍，並在2013年拿下世界大賽MVP，自2004年起連續10年獲選全明星賽。身披紅襪戰袍14年，球團在賽前宣布將他的34號球衣退休，麻州州長貝克以及波士頓市長沃爾許，也分別將境內一橋一街命名為「老爹橋」、「歐提茲街」以示紀念。
被視為準名人堂球員，歐提茲說，「我能做的就是在球場上盡我所能。傳遞正面能量，並讓所有人嘗試做對的事，是我一生致力目標。」
